SOUTH HUTCHINSON - Joseph M. Reed Sr., 67, died Jan. 5, 2009, at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson.
He was born Dec. 17, 1941, at Grace Hospital, Hutchinson, Ks, the son of Howard (Ray) and Vera (Gagnebin) Reed.
A longtime resident of Hutchinson, he retired from the City of Hutchinson after 29 years as Supervisor for the Street Department.
He was a member of the Salt City Cruiser Car Club, and was an avid car enthusiast with a passion for restoring old cars and trucks. He loved to show cars at car shows, bowl, throw horseshoes and laugh and joke with his family and friends. He will be missed by all.
On Aug 3, 1960, he married Bernice "Bea" Katherine Briggs. Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Joseph Michael Jr., Hutchinson, and Wade Allen and wife Akiko, Yokosuka, Japan; four grandchildren, Brandon and wife Patty Reed, Hutchinson, Justin and wife Jennifer Reed, Campo, Calif., Nathan Reed, Hutchinson, and Marty Reed, Yokosuka, Japan; 10 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Syvanna, Ryan, Allison, Gabriele, Caitlyn, Ethan, Drew, Jessie, and Addison; a brother, Tom and wife Judy Reed, Hutchinson; two sisters, Patsy and husband Al Moylan, Snohomish, Wash., and Linda and husband Frank Humphrey, Abbyville; and in-laws, Colleen and Charles Nichols, Desoto, Patty and Ron Brawner, Hutchinson, William and Sherry Briggs, Hutchinson, and Lester and Lucy Briggs, Plattsmouth, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his son Vernie Ray Reed, his parents, in-laws, Verner and Ethel Briggs, three sisters, Glenna Arneson, Shirley Schoonover, and Deanna Hammer, and his pet dog, Shelby Lynn.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday January 10, 2009, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park.
Memorials may be sent to the Hutchinson Animal Shelter, or the American Heart Association, both in care of the mortuary.
