Obituary

Junior K. "J.R." Haverty, 82, died Dec. 13, 2009, at Wesley Towers, Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson.

He was born June 10, 1927, in Lawrence, to Alvin Augustus and Ruby Dalphine Moore Haverty.

He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1945, and the University of Kansas in 1951 with a degree in engineering and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He was a Hutchinson resident since 1954, moving here from Kansas City. Following graduation from KU he worked for General Motors at the Kansas City plant from 1951 to 1954. In 1954, he went to work with his father-in-law at Arlie Boyer Motor Company in Hutchinson. J.R. then followed with a 40-year career in Hutchinson real estate at Kline-Haverty Realtors and retired with Astle Real Estate Co.

He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church, served as president of the Hutchinson Chapter American Cancer Society, past president of the Hutchinson Jaycees, member of the Hutchinson-Reno County Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Ambassador Club, served on the Boy Scout Council, member of the Hutchinson Kiwanis Club, and served as president of the Hutchinson Board of Realtors. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Oct. 27, 1950, he married Marcia Jane Boyer in Lawrence, KS. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Mike and his wife Brenda, Leawood, KS; daughters, Janet Dusch and husband Jeff, St. Louis, and Kathi Wingert and husband Roger, Rogers, Ark.; brothers, Charles and Alvin "Beb" Haverty, both of Lawrence; and seven grandchildren, Carrie Crawford, Brandon Haverty, J.J. Dusch, Julia Dusch, Brooke Haverty, Joey Dusch and Lauren Wingert.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mark, and his parents.

Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Pat Ault Duell presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and will be after the services at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Private family graveside service will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Wesley Towers Good Samaritan Fund, in care of the funeral home.
