Obituary

NEWTON - Karen Lyn (Werner) Tommer, 45, passed away February 23, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born in Attica to Karl and Donna (Bridgeman) Werner, and educated at Cunningham High School, Kansas State University-Salina, and later Wichita State University in business administration. She shared 21 years of marriage with her husband, Wayne.

Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and remained in remission for 4 ½ years. Upon its return, she left the workforce to focus on time with her family, while continuing to receive treatments.

Karen is survived by: husband, Wayne; son, Hayden; daughter, Kerstin; mother, Donna Werner; sister, Karla Westerman and husband Jerry; brother-in-law, Mike Gillen; and four nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her father, Karl Werner, and sister, Janene Gillen.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Karen's life will be 2 p.m. March 2, 2019, at Shalom Mennonite Church, 800 East 1st St., Newton. Inurnment will take place with family at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Zenda. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Camp Kesem, a community developed to support children whose lives have been affected by their parent's cancer, or Karen Tommer Memorial Fund, in the care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
