Obituary

Karla Marie (Stieben) Stallman, 70, died Sept. 30, 2015, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born June 25, 1945, at Grisell Memorial Hospital, Ransom, to William Leslie and Emma (Schwien) Stieben.

Karla was raised on a farm southeast of Bazine, with her brothers, Donald, Clyde and LaVerne. She attended Bazine Grade School and graduated from Bazine High School in 1963. She attended Ft. Hays State College for a year. She was employed at the Ness County Extension Office until her marriage. Karla and George Vernon Stallman were married on March 28, 1970, in the Bazine United Methodist Church. To this union three children were born: Shandi Cay, Shawnda Dee and Jason Scott. Karla and Vernon lived in Hays and Scottsbluff, Neb. while Vernon was teaching. They then moved to Larned, where they owned and operated a Western Auto Store and Karla was employed by the Pawnee County Extension Service. They moved to Hutchinson in 1983.

Karla was employed by the Reno County Health Department until her retirement in 2013. She then worked on a call-in basis until recently when she completely retired. Karla was active in the Faith United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's group and served on several other church and women's group committees. She had participated in 4-H as a youth and became a 4-H leader when her children joined 4-H. Karla and her daughters were asked to start a new 4-H Club in Reno County. They started the Hutch 4-Leaf Clovers Club and all three children were active in the club. Karla was a long-time member and officer of the Reno County 4-H Foundation. Karla loved to attend her children and grandchildren's events, piece quilts, embroider, tend to her garden and can her produce, cook, and grow flowers, especially peonies, some which came from her mother and mother-in-law.

Karla was preceded in death by: her parents; infant brother, Gary; and brothers, Donald and LaVerne. She is survived by: her husband, Vernon; daughters, Shandi Stallman, Shawnda Shook; son, Jason Stallman and wife Jennifer, all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Johnathon Shook and Emmie and Madalyn Stallman, all of Hutchinson; brother, Clyde Stieben and wife Joan of Bazine; sister-in-law, Dorothy Stieben of Hays; five nieces and two nephews; three step nieces; and a host of family and friends.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2015, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastors Kim Serio and Tim Carey presiding. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Faith United Methodist Church, Reno County 4-H Foundation or Hospice House of Hutchinson, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
