Obituary

Kenneth G. Black, 88, died November 1, 2008, at Promise Regional Medical Center.

He was born October 23, 1920, in Green Castle, Pa., the son of William and Mary Ida Showalter Black. He served in the United States Army and was a loyal supporter of many military charities.

A resident of Hutchinson for 66 years, he worked at the flour mill for 17 years, and retired from Bunge Elevator, where he was a galley worker.

On August 5, 1940, he married Mary Katherine Southworth in Hutchinson. He graduated from Salt City Business College in the late 1950s. He was a member of the Community Church of the Brethren.

Survivors include: his wife, Mary Katherine Black, Hutchinson; six daughters, Evelyn Wilhite and husband R.C. of Burrton, Birddella L. McKenna of Aurora, Colo., Kassie C. Simonton and husband Kyle of North Glenn, Colo., Judy A. Saunders, Vickie S. Lightner and husband Dean, and Norma J. Gardner and husband Jack, all of Hutchinson; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, five sisters, a grandson, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 6, 2008, at Elliott Mortuary, with Marlo Oltman and Ed Switzer officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial with military honors conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard will be in Fairlawn Burial Park.

Memorials may be sent to the Disabled American Veterans, or Hospice of Reno County, both in care of the mortuary.
