Kenneth "Ken" Gerald Smith, 69, died peacefully on Nov. 24, 2011, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Kenneth was born on July 31, 1942, in Van Nuys, Calif., to Vincent and Margaret Ogdon Smith.
He was raised in San Francisco, Calif., where he attended high school. Kenneth started working in the grocery business at the age of 17, and worked as a produce manager for Safeway and Albertsons stores in southern California for over 27 years, prior to relocating back to northern California. He met his wife, Carolyn, and they moved to Grass Valley, Calif., where they purchased and operated a camping resort for 13 years. The couple then sold the business and purchased Clear Creek Feed and Supply in Grass Valley, Calif. They operated the store until their retirement in March of 2005, and then moved to Hutchinson to be near their son.
Kenneth enjoyed the outdoors and doing projects around the home with his wife. He loved animals and was very close to his pug, "Mimi," who provided him great comfort in his time of sickness. He was always supportive of his wife and family's endeavors, giving encouragement and advice when needed. Kenneth is most remembered by his family for his wonderful sense of humor and his signature sunglasses and toothpick.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carolyn (Sue); sister, Rose Marie Foote of Lake Stevens, Wash.; brother, Bob Smith of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Naomi and Curtis Gillespie of Redding, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Libertee Thompson of Hutchinson, Kan.; sons, Michael Thompson of Grass Valley, Calif., Brian Thompson of Grass Valley, Calif., Kelly Thompson of Washington; daughter, Tammy Smith of Spokane, Wash.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Kenneth was preceded in death by his father, Vincent Smith; mother, Margaret Ogdon; son, William (Billy) Joseph Smith; brothers, Vincent Smith and James Smith.
Cremation has taken place. By the request of Kenneth, a private gathering of family was held at his home and there will be no other services. Memorial contributions may be made to Cause For Paws, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
