Obituary

Kermit C. Menzies, 71, retired Hutchinson High School science and math teacher and instructor at Hutchinson Community College, died June 7, 2014. He was born July 16, 1942, in rural Morrowville, Kansas, the son of Hubert and Lois (Bahl) Menzies.

He graduated from Morrowville Rural High School in 1960 and from Emporia State University in 1964 with his BSE and in 1968 with his MSE. Kermit was a high school instructor for 32 years, 22 of those years at Hutchinson High School, before retiring in 1996. Kermit also was an employee of the Hutchinson Salt Company and then worked as a mine safety instructor for Hutchinson Community College.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Lutheran Laymen's League and lifetime member of NEA and KNEA. He was also a member of Hutchinson Area Retired School Personnel Association. He was on the Mine Safety Team. Kermit loved to read, watch movies and spend time with his family.

He is survived by: his wife, Joyce Elaine (Blocker) Menzies. They were married on May 24, 1964, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Haven. They celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Other survivors include: sons, David K. (Angela) Menzies of Aurora, Colo., and Kenneth J. (Darla) Menzies of Dallas, Texas; grandsons, David C., Ethan, and Connor Menzies of Aurora, Colo.; granddaughter, Heather Boyd of Collinsville, Okla.; sisters, Roberta Hauschel (Jim) of Warsaw, Mo., Rebecca Nance (Marvin) of Queen Creek, Ariz., Ramona Derousseau (Michael) of Clay Center; and mother-in-law, Nellie Blocker of Haven.
Kermit was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Hubert Eugene and Larry Lee Menzies.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Haven, with Pastor Russell Bonine officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in St. Paul's Church Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Lutheran Hour Ministries, or to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 North Main, Hutchinson, Ks 67501.
