LaVerne C. Barker, 93, of Hutchinson, died May 16, 2010, at Good Samaritan Center in Hutchinson. He was born Sept. 12, 1916, in Iola, Kan., the son of Claude and Flossie Jones Barker. He was a graduate of Iola High School and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hutchinson. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for J. H. Shears Construction Co. He married Erma D. Donald on Oct. 1, 1937, in Ft. Scott. She died April 17, 1982. He later married Letha Gates on Feb. 14, 1983, in Hutchinson. She died Dec. 9, 2003.


Survivors include: a daughter, Patricia D. Hunt, Latham, N.Y.; two grandsons, Kevin Hunt, Mechanicville, N.Y., and Jeffrey Hunt and his wife Chiloe, Cohoes, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren, Andraya, Owen and Ellerie Hunt; and a pet dog, Muffy. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Delores Allen.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in Hutchinson, with Rev. Jeanine Rishel presiding. A committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at LaHarpe Cemetery, LaHarpe, Kansas.
