Obituary

LaVerne Wolfer, 82, of Hutchinson died Nov. 25, 2010, at Pleasant View Home in Inman.

She was born March 15, 1928, in Harrisonville, Mo., the daughter of Jesse D. and Ada P. Schrock Hartzler.

She was an Assistant Librarian at Central Junior High and later Liberty Junior High Schools in Hutchinson. A Hutchinson resident since 1964, she was a member of South Hutchinson Mennonite Church, and served as the church librarian and also directed the church choir and junior choir. She was active with the Hutchinson Community Concert, the Hutchinson Choral Society, and sang in the Bethany College Oratorio Society in Lindsborg.

She sang with the Oratorio Society in Carnegie Hall in New York City. She was a member of the Hesston College Alumni Assn. and the WMSC sewing club. She enjoyed traveling and had been to China, Europe, and Australia. She was a 1946 graduate of Hesston Academy and attended Hesston College.

She married Lowell A. Wolfer Feb. 8, 1948, in Wellman, Iowa. He died Oct. 7, 1994.

Survivors include: a son, Gary Wolfer and wife Kay of Buhler; daughters, Cheryl Wolfer of Port Angeles, Wash., and Bonnie Ballard and husband Mick of Hutchinson; brothers, Victor Hartzler and wife Marlene of Bella Vista, Ark., Dale Hartzler and wife Meg of Louisville, Colo., and Robert Hartzler and wife Charlene of Coralville, Iowa; a sister, Orpha Yoder and husband Richard of Wayland, Iowa; grandchildren, Kimberley Gourlay, Jay Ballard, Ross Ballard, Lane Wolfer, Kelly Wolfer, and Olivia Wolfer; and two great grandsons, Pierce and Declan Gourlay. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

A graveside service will be 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at Penwell-Gable Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. at South Hutchinson Mennonite Church with Pastor Howard Wagler presiding.

A visitation will be Monday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family to greet friends 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary.
