Obituary

Leon Minger Ramsey Jr., 91, died July 1, 2015, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson. He was born May 9, 1924, in Abilene, to Leon Minger Sr. and Ruth Ardith (Haddock) Ramsey.

He graduated from Dickinson County High School on May 26, 1942, and then the University of Kansas in 1949. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the battle of Iwo Jima on Volcano Island. He was wounded in action on March 22, 1945, and awarded the Purple Heart on May 9, 1945.

On Sept. 1, 1946, Leon married Marjorie Easter in Abilene. She died Jan. 25, 2012. Since the 1950's, Leon was a pharmacist in Garden City and the owner of Plaza Pharmacy for 25 years. After he retired in 1990, Leon's second part-time career was traveling to small towns in Western Kansas and working as a relief pharmacist. Leon and Marjorie lived in Garden City for over 50 years before moving in 2007 to Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, the Elks, Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge, Shriners' Isis Temple in Salina, volunteered for the American Red Cross, and Kansas Pharmacists Association. He enjoyed golfing, men's coffee groups and being active in the church.

Survivors include: four daughters, Barbara Ramsey of Rawlins, Wyo., Dr. Gwen Arnett and husband Dr. Ken Arnett of Mission Hills, Juli Burnett and Dr. John A. Burnett and their children, Erin and Lyndy Burnett, all of Overland Park, Sheryll Clarke and husband Dan of Mt. Hope; sisters, Emma Jane Littlejohn of Salina, and Rose Marie White and husband Jim of Midland, Texas; brother, John "Jack" Ramsey of Salina; and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2015, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery presiding. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps. Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2015, in Prairiedale Cemetery, Talmage, Kan. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday through Saturday, July 11, at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the KU Endowment-School of Pharmacy or Wesley Towers Good Samaritan Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501. .
