Leona Cooper Wiens-Friesen, 100, passed away on Aug. 21, 2013, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center after a two week illness with her family at her bedside. She was born on Nov. 7, 1912, in rural Reno County, to Charles Levitt and Lillian May Stuart Cooper and lived in the Nickerson and Hutchinson area her entire life.
Leona graduated from Reno Community High School at Nickerson in 1931 and from Adela Hale Secretarial School in 1933. Leona worked as an Education Secretary at Reno Community High School in Nickerson prior to her marriage to Harold in June 1944, and as the school secretary at McCandless Elementary School in Hutchinson from 1950 to 1976. She was an active member for fifty years in Phi Beta Psi, Zeta Gamma Chapter; a member of the First United Methodist Church her entire adult life, the United Methodist Women, Wesley Weds Sunday Class, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Rainbow Chapter of FCE.
Leona is survived by: her children, Karen Wiens Harrison and husband John of Austin, Texas, Terry Wiens of Hutchinson; five grandchildren, Mark Harrison, Cindi Hatton and husband Shane, all of Austin, Texas, Michelle Robinson, Kimberly Wiens, and Jordan Wiens and wife Kayla, all of Hutchinson; three great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Onie Cooper, all of Hutchinson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Harold Wiens in 1978, and Menno Friesen in 1987; five brothers, William, Gerald, Eldin, Richard and Harold; and an infant sister.
A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, in Buhler Municipal Cemetery West, Buhler, Kan., with Deacon Jeff Jacobs presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
