Obituary

Leonard Henry Dirks, 86, died Sept. 9, 2007, at the Hospice House, Hutchinson.

He was born May 5, 1921 in Beaver County, Okla., the son of Tobias T. and Katy Zielkie Dirks. He had lived in the Hutchinson community since 1949. He is a 1940 graduate of Greenough (Okla.) High School.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, serving in the Pacific, stationed in Alaska. He was in the grain business for 42 years and manager for Farmers Co-op in Abbyville for 22 years before retiring in 1986.

He belonged to the Park Place Christian Church, Hutchinson, was a lifetime member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, Wichita Consistory, Scottish Rite Free Masonry and 32nd degree Mason, lifetime member of the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68, and VFW Bob Campbell Post No. 1361, and Loyal Order of Moose No. 982. He loved life and truly loved people. He never met a stranger and will surely be missed by all who knew him.

On May 1, 1949, he married Phyllis J. Marshall in Scandia. She died Feb. 24, 1991. On Sept. 25, 1993, he married Donna Harper in Hutchinson. She survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Jo Martin and husband, Dan, Salina, and Jan Moore and husband, Doug, Emporia; a stepson, Steve Harper and wife, Karen, Hutchinson; a brother, Tobias Dirks and wife, Ann, St. Francis; two sisters, Leona Loepp, Liberal, and Adeline Gobin, Perryton, Texas; seven grandchildren, Steve and Kate Martin, Layne Moore, Max Heinlein and wife, D'ana, Jeff Heinlein and wife, Laci, Leslie Garner, Sean Harper and wife Barbara; and nine great-grandchildren, Eva Garner, Carsyn and Carys Heinlein, Mariah and Piper Heinlein, Eric, Brooke, Baye and Cassandra Harper; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Heinlein, great-grandson, Ethan Garner, and two sisters, Darline Kitch and Sylvia Isaacs.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Park Place Christian Church, 2600 N. Adams, Hutchinson with Pastor Kim Biery presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Buhler Municipal Cemetery.
