Obituary

Lona Lou Hinshaw, 89, of Hutchinson, died October 20, 2026, at Hospice House. She was born December 20, 1936, in Stafford, the daughter of James Sanford and Sadie Maye (Carson) Logue.

Lona graduated from Stafford High School in 1955, attended Phillips University, and received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Fort Hays State University in 1960. She worked as a registered nurse and certified psychiatric nurse until she retired in 2001. Lona worked in a variety of settings throughout her 41 years as an R.N., but spent most of her career at Hutchinson Hospital. After retiring, Lona worked at Horizons Mental Health Center in the Patient Assistance Program. She also was a massage therapist in the 90’s at TLC Massage Therapy.

In addition to her career as a nurse and being a wife and mother, Lona was very active in the community, serving as a Reno County 4-H volunteer, local Girls State coordinator, Reno County Extension Board member, Reno County 4-H Foundation Founding Member, Retired Senior Volunteer Program Board Member and volunteer Hutchinson Community Garden Board member, Fair Price Clothing Store volunteer, and loyal YMCA water class member. She enjoyed woodworking and took the lifelong learning woodworking class through HutchCC for 30 years. Lona was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served on the Trustees Board and Endowment committee, United Women of Faith “Sarah Group”, and was active in the “Seekers” Sunday school class.

Lona loved gardening and sharing the vegetables she grew, Blue Dragon Athletics, and audio books. People marveled at her energy, work ethic, love for service and vitality. Lona had friends of all ages and collected more “family” throughout her life. There is no shortage of people who, at some point in their young lives, called Lona “Mom” or “Grams.” Lona was a gift beyond measure: to those who benefited from her fierce commitment to an expansive understanding of “family,” to the patients healed under her care, and to the broader community.

On September 1, 1962, Lona married Dean B. Hinshaw, in Stafford. He died November 15, 1991. They were both loyal supporters of Hutchinson Community College and had classrooms named after them in both the Richard E. Smith Science Center and Bob and Lou Peel Allied Health Center.

Lona is survived by her daughters, Beth Hinshaw and Dana Hinshaw of Hutchinson; granddaughter, Destiny Wiser (Kade) of Farmerville, TX; grandson, Jeremy Hinshaw of Hutchinson; sons-of-the-heart, Enrique Courcelles (Sonia) of Boca Raton, FL, Lars König of Hanover, Germany; grandson-of-the-heart, Jordan Payan of Hutchinson; sisters-in-law, Ruth Hinshaw of Wichita, Barbara Logue of Stafford; nieces, Marty Madden and Sandra Nicolet (Scott) of Dodge City, Melinda Owens (Robert) of Stafford, Rachel Morey (Jerad) of New Brighton, MN; Nephews, Doug Logue (Paula) of Colorado Springs, CO, Bart Logue of Sedalia, CO, Kevin Hinshaw of Benton, Andrew McIver of Abbyville; and many extended family members.
