Lorna Mary Evans Oswalt, 86, of Hutchinson, died Dec. 2, 2012, at her home.
Lorna was born Jan. 14, 1926, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Arthur and Hannah (Jenkins) Evans.
Lorna graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1943, and attended Hutchinson Community College, Kansas State University, and later graduated from Wichita State University.
She married her high school sweetheart, D. Stewart "Stew" Oswalt, after his service in World War II, on June 20, 1947.
They relocated to Topeka, where Stew finished his law degree at Washburn University. They returned to reside in Hutchinson, where they raised four children, Jim, Jane, Dick, and Susan. Lorna was truly the "June Cleaver"- dedicating her life to her family, and always thinking of others. She was a former member of Northminster Presbyterian Church and a current member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of PEO-Chapter D, a member of Chi Omega Sorority, and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #68. She organized numerous reunions for Hutchinson High School's class of '43. As the last survivor in her family of five, Lorna was going strong to the end. She still lived alone in her home of 51 years and recently hosted a family reunion with over 40 nieces, nephews, and cousins in attendance. The night before she passed away, she spent the evening watching K-State win the Big 12 Championship title with two of her grandchildren.
Survivors include: two sons, James Oswalt and his wife Jamie, and Dick Oswalt and his wife Megan, all of Hutchinson; two daughters, Jane Pope Meehan, and her husband Richard of Centennial, Colo., and Susan Gibbons and her husband Dave of Leawood; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Stew on Feb. 15, 1997; two brothers, Dwight Evans and Francis Evans; two sisters, Ruth Simmons and Mona Smithson; and her beloved dog, "Gizmo."
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church, with Reverend Skip Johnson presiding. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, and the family will greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
