KELLER, Texas – Two weeks after celebrating her 99th birthday, Lucille Newman (aka "Bamoo") passed away June 17, 2016, at her home in Keller, Texas. Lucille was born June 2, 1917, near Burdett, and was the oldest of five children born to Washington T. and Leora M. (Moore) Crockett.
In 1935, Lucille graduated from Burdett High School after having met the love of her life and future husband, Edward E. Newman. They were married July 25, 1936, Ed passed away May 14, 2006.
Lucille was always a "mom"; first, to her own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but also to the many kids who passed through the Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corps of Hutchinson. To everyone's delight, she was "corps mom" for eight years. Lucille was a generous, giving person who had great passion and worked tirelessly for many groups, including: her beloved Phi Beta Psi sorority; Good Sam's camping clubs, both locally and nationwide; as a Counselor at Kansas Girls' State for 10 years; the First United Methodist Church of Hutchinson in women's groups and community outreach; and the American Legion Auxiliary for 59 years, holding every local office and several state offices, including State President and poppy salesperson extraordinaire. Working for the Kansas State Fair for almost 30 years was another joy for her.
Lucille is survived by: daughter, Carolyne Markle, Keller, Texas; son, Craig Newman and wife Mary, Kenmore, Wash.; sister, Wanda Kollhoff, Hutchinson; four grandchildren, Doug Markle and wife Catherine, Fort Worth, Texas, Jeff Markle and wife Marcie of Castle Rock, Colo., Lynsey Newman Cupples, Everett, Wash., Marcus Newman and wife Erin, Lynnwood, Wash.; and six great-granddaughters, Bailey and Chase Markle, Fort Worth, Texas, Emily and Kaylee Markle, Castle Rock, Colo., and Ellarue and Tilly Newman, Lynnwood, Wash. She is also survived by her very special nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Preceding Lucille in death were: her husband, Ed; her parents; sister, Louise Fooshee; brothers, Elvin and Delmar Crockett; son-in-law, Gary Markle; and daughter-in-law, Susie Newman.
"We will miss you terribly but enjoy your peaceful rest. You have certainly earned it."
