Luella "Lu" T. Steele, 93, died Sept. 16, 2012, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson.

She was born Jan. 30, 1919, in Winfield, Kan., the daughter of Harold John and Helen Lucille Hensley Thorp.

She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1936. Lu had worked for Wiley Department Store and retired as a bookkeeper for KP&L after 20 years. She was a longtime member of Emanuel Lutheran Church where she was active in various church groups. She was also a member of the KP&L Retirees Group.

On Sept. 17, 1937, she married Gilbert "Gib" Steele in Kansas City, Mo. He died October 8, 1977.

Survivors include: four children, Brad Steele and wife Nancy of Hutchinson, Stuart Steele and wife Julie of Grand Blanc, Mich., Marcy Schmidler and husband Curt of Irvine, Calif., Marc Steele and wife Lynda of Peoria, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and three sisters, Nina Dellosa, Hilda Erwin and Donna Longenecker.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, with Pastors Tim Carey and Phil Vickers presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with family to receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson. Burial will be in the Fairlawn Burial Park.
