Mabel J. "Jan" Hartung, 67, went home to be with the Lord on June 27, 2007, at Hutchinson Hospital.
She was born Jan. 23, 1940, in Junction City, the daughter of Marion and Waneta N. Whitbeck Artes. She attended schools in Junction City. A resident of Hutchinson, she was owner and operator of Hartung Daycare for many years. She was known as "Momma Taiwan" from her advertising of the Taiwan Family Restaurant in Hutchinson.
She belonged to First Christian Church, Lysle Rishel Post No. 68 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Bob Campbell Post No. 1361 of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, she was active in the Big Brothers Big Sisters, Good Time Bingo Club and was an ambassador/greeter at Golden Plains Health Care Center.
On July 11, 1958, she married Billy Gene Hartung in Junction City. He survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Dennis D. and wife, Julie, Hutchinson; three daughters, Debra M. Hester and husband, Harold, Delaine G. Henderson and husband, Marion, all of Hutchinson, and Dawnita Jo Crump and husband, Dennis, Salina; a brother, Carl Rooks, Kansas City; four sisters, Barbara Shehee, Savannah, Ga., Dollie Rooks, Joplin, Mo., Vivian Gregg, Drexel, Mo., and Cindy McAnulty, Wichita; eight grandchildren, Jason Hester, Anna Hester, Matt Hartung, Bryce Hartung, Jennifer Henderson, Billy Henderson, Kelly Crump, and Andy Crump; and five great-grandchildren, Harley Hester, Heather Hester, Haley Hester, Brody Hester and Braden Hester.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother; Roy Rooks; and a sister, Louise Rooks.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with Pastor Mel Walton presiding. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson.
