WICHITA - Mamie Virginia Might, 88, died Oct. 30, 2005, at Presbyterian Manor, Wichita.
She was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Colorado Springs, Colo., the daughter of James Edward and Clara Elizabeth Mayberry Might. The family moved to Hutchinson when she was four years old. She attended a country grade school, Prosperity School, for eight years, and then graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1934. During the severe Depression years, she pursued a college education, attending Sterling College from 1934-35, working for her room and board with a family, and for the college through a government student aid program. She then transferred to Hutchinson Junior College, graduating in 1936. To pay for further education, she taught school for two years, then enrolling at Emporia State Teachers College, majoring in Library Science, graduating in 1941. After several years working as a librarian in Kansas City, Hutchinson and Burlington County, N.J., she enrolled at Columbia University in New York City and graduated with a Master's in Library Science in 1951. She then began a 30-year career in the Detroit, Mich., Library system, first as a children's librarian and later becoming head of a branch library. She retired in 1981, and moved to Wichita in 1993.
In Detroit, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served in several positions, first as a Deacon, then as a Session member. She was President of the Women's Association and taught Sunday school classes including a class for the mentally handicapped.
In Wichita, she continued serving the First Presbyterian Church, both as an active church member and as a volunteer, working at the church's Economy Corner charity store, assisting in the church office and visiting ill members. She also participated in a church quilting group making quilts for disadvantaged children.
Mamie was a woman of varied interests, which included music, theater, world travel and genealogy. She traced her family's genealogy back to the first immigrants arriving in America in 1638. From this research she was able to substantiate a family participation in the Revolutionary War and gained membership in the D.A.R.
