Obituary

Marcy L. Phelan, 55, died July 29, 2006, at Hospice House.

She was born July 19, 1951, in Turon, the daughter of Glynne and Norma Lee Montford Smith. She attended Turon Grade School, graduated from Nickerson High School, Hutchinson Community College and Emporia State Teachers College. A resident of Hutchinson since 1988, moving from New Jersey, she was a receptionist for The Hutchinson News[an error occurred while processing this directive]
for the last 10 years. In 1973, she was employed by the National Cheerleading Association in Indiana, and was employed by Business Week, New Jersey.

She belonged to South Hutchinson United Methodist Church. She was elected cheerleader at each school she attended. In her senior year at Emporia State Teachers College she entered the Miss Emporia pageant, where she was voted Miss Congeniality. She loved her job and co-workers, who became her second family.

She married Daniel J. Phelan Jr., in New Jersey.

Survivors include: her mother, Norma Lee Smith, Hutchinson; a brother, Mike G. Smith and wife, Ruth, Hutchinson; two sisters, Rhonda Gisick and husband, Marty, and Susie Turner and husband, Bob; nephews and nieces, Jeremy Smith and wife, Alicia, Travis Smith and wife, Bethany, Matthew Turner, Alaina Smith, Erica Smith, Michelle Turner, Jenny Barrett and husband, Branden, and Amy Philbrick and husband, Malcolm; great-nephew and niece, Mara and Logan Smith; several aunts, uncles, cousins; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Glynne Smith.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at South Hutchinson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard E. Zimmerman presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Private family inurnment will be in Lerado Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the South Hutchinson United Methodist Endowment, Hospice of Reno County or to the Cancer Council of Reno County, all in care of the funeral home.
