Obituary

Memorial services for Margaret Gowans Lundstrom, 75, a long-time Hutchinson resident and member of a pioneering Kansas family, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow at the church.

She died Dec. 17 in Des Moines, Iowa, with her family beside her.

A unique combination of loving homemaker and brainy mathematics professor, she was best known for her wit, intellectual curiosity and unfailing generosity.

She was born Feb. 24, 1931, in Philadelphia, the daughter of James Walter and Eleanor Gowans and was raised in central Kansas. She graduated in 1948 from Hutchinson High School and attended Hutchinson Junior College, whose stadium is named for her father, J.W., the former superintendent of schools. She was a charter member and longtime board member of the Hutchinson High School Alumni Association.

It was at junior college that she met Max Lundstrom, her loving husband of 55 years. The couple wed on Dec. 28, 1951, and later settled in Wayne, Neb. With a master's degree in mathematics, Margaret taught math and physics at the Wayne State College and co-owned an antiques business.

But her first love was family. She was her daughters' Girl Scout leader and Sunday School teacher and was active in the Wayne Presbyterian Church. An adventurer at heart, she rode about town on her bicycle before it was fashionable and traveled alone to Canada in 1972 to see the sun's total eclipse.

Marg and Max returned to Hutchinson to retire in 1993, where Margaret eagerly volunteered at the Kansas Cosmosphere, leading tours. She traveled with Max, relished college football, read voraciously and was active in the First Presbyterian Church and PEO. In September, ill health took the couple to Des Moines.

Survivors include: her husband, Ray Max Lundstrom of Des Moines; daughters, Elaine Lundstrom (David Yurdin), of Urbandale, Iowa, and Marjie Lundstrom (Sam Stanton), Sacramento, Calif.; four grandchildren, Leah, Evan, Nicholas and Riley; a brother, Robert Gowans, Greenville, Mich.; a foreign exchange daughter, Rosa Mery Lesh (Kurt Lesh), Colorado Springs, and their two children, Kevin and Jennifer.

Memorials may be made to the Margaret G. Lundstrom FATP Scholarship Fund at the Kansas Cosmosphere, 1100 North Plum, Hutchinson, KS 67501, or the First Presbyterian Church, 201 East Sherman, Hutchinson, KS 67501. Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, is in charge of arrangements. Personal condolences may be sent to www.elliottmortuary.com.
