Ruth Marilynn (Sandy) Voth, 89, of Hutchinson and formerly of Garden City, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, in Hutchinson. She was born May 27, 1922, in McPherson, Kan., the daughter of Doretta (Harms) Sandy and Charles H. Sandy.
After graduating from McPherson College in the class of 1944, where she was named Homecoming Queen, she taught physical education at East Topeka and Winfield High Schools. Marilynn was engaged to George Voth upon his return from the Army in World War II and they were married on June 8, 1947. The couple moved to Moundridge, Sylvia, Bloom and eventually Hutchinson, where George became manager of the local Co-op elevator and Marilynn raised a growing family. They later moved to Garden City for 15 years, returning to Hutchinson in 1972. Marilynn is survived by her husband of 64 years, George of Hutchinson; and four sons, Scott of St. Louis, Kent (Debbie) of Wichita, Todd (Emily) of Kansas City and Ned (Jana) of Denver. In addition, she leaves behind a sister, Dorisjane Casey of Reinbeck, Iowa; brother, Charles "Bud" Sandy of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren, Elliott (Jenny), Mitchell, Hillary and Andrea.
She was a member of Chapter HP, P.E.O., Den Mother to many Cub Scouts and raised four Eagle Scouts. In 1979, she accompanied her husband to Manila, Philippines for six years, where he was an international consultant. While there, she became an accomplished Chinese brush painting artist. Marilynn was a loyal member of First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson and UMW. She and her husband were members of Tri M Sunday School Class. Marilynn also headed the "Sew 'N Sews," a volunteer church sewing group, making hundreds of quilts for homeless shelters and prisons. Marilynn leaves behind friends from all around the world who will remember her for her kindness, understanding, easy smile and Christian values. The family would like to thank the Hester Care Center at Wesley Towers staff for their ongoing care and dedication.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at First United Methodist Church, with Reverend Mark Conard officiating. Private family burial will be in McPherson Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Memorials may be made to Wesley Towers Good Samaritan Fund or First United Methodist Church, in care of the mortuary.
