Obituary

Marion E. Nunemaker, M.D., 90, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012. He was born Dec. 3, 1921, in rural Reno County, the son of Joseph and Gladys Mary Kabler Nunemaker, Jr.

He was a lifetime Reno County resident, graduating from Langdon High School, Hutchinson Community College, Kansas University and Kansas University Medical School. While serving in the Navy he was the chief physician at the Naval Hospital in Guam. The naval government of Guam, M.I. (USA) appointed him the native population public health officer. Marion was a member of the A.M.A., had been Reno County Public Physician, the Reno County Medical Association President, the Chief Physician of the anesthesiology department at Hutchinson Hospital, the Chief of Staff at Hutchinson Hospital and for many years held a private family practice, retiring in 1986. He was a published medical author and speaker and belonged to Hutchinson Optimist Club.

On Dec. 6, 1969, he married Dorothy Elaine Balding in Hutchinson. She died in 2006.

He is survived by his children and their spouses: Sharon (Dan) Deming, Hutchinson, Susan (John) Blocker, Haven, Terry (Jeanne) Nunemaker, Wellington, Mary Young, Broomfield, Colorado, Kathy Nunemaker, Boulder, Colorado; step-children, Kathy (Larry) Howse, Hutchinson, Robert (Susan) Balding, McPherson, Pam (Bruce) Berns, Perry; a brother, Wesley (Twila), Tulsa, Oklahoma; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Nunemaker, South Hutchinson; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; special friend, Marilyn Woodson, Hutchinson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Charles.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, January 6, 2012, in Fairlawn Burial Park, with Reverend Jim Rhaesa officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory.
