Marjorie "Marj" S. Shafer, 85, died June 22, 2011, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born January 6, 1926, in Belleville, to the Rev. Charles Henry and Anna Marie Cox Simpson. Marjorie was a homemaker and a bridge instructor. Marjorie was a member of South Hutchinson Mennonite Church, the American Contract Bridge League, Sunflower Duplicate Bridge Club, Hutchinson Duplicate Bridge Club, Director for several years of Hutchinson Duplicate Bridge Annual Tournament, a Silver Life Master and attended tournaments in Kansas and surrounding states. On September 8, 1946, she married "JF" Shafer in Tribune, Ks. He died March 25, 2007.
Survivors include: daughter, Debby Updegraff and husband Bob of Hutchinson; sons, Dr. Timothy "Tim" Shafer and wife Kim of Abilene, Geoffrey Shafer and wife Beth Ann of Galva, and Gerald "Jerry" Shafer and wife Donna of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Kristin Haugsness and husband Greg of Ottawa, Angela Fairchild and husband Brent of Hutchinson, Jacob Shafer of Tampa Florida, Benjamin and Anna Shafer of Abilene, Captain Amanda Shafer of Las Vegas, Nevada, Christopher Shafer and wife Angela of McPherson, Jerrod, Austin, and Jordan Shafer of Hutchinson; great-grandchildren, Samantha Haugsness of Ottawa, Dresden, Ellowyn, and Caitlin Fairchild of Hutchinson.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Nathan Simpson, Valeda Murphy, Helen Connor, Paul Simpson and Lois Simpson.
Memorial service will be Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at South Hutchinson Mennonite Church, with Pastor Howard Wagler and Pastor Jeremy Patterson presiding. Friends may sign the book Saturday, Sunday and Monday 9-9 with family to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Cremation has taken place.
