Marvin E. Chappel, 87, was born to Clifton and Cecil (Rush) Chappel on March 18, 1924.
He went to be with his Lord on Sept. 3, 2011.
Marvin graduated from Little River High School and shortly thereafter enlisted in the Navy, serving in World War II and until 1946.
He married his high school sweetheart, Florene Voth, on June 1, 1947.
They lived and farmed in the Lyons/Saxman area for 50 years. After retirement, the couple moved to Hutchinson, where they became members of First Baptist Church, volunteered at Dillon Living Center and the Christian Soup Ministry and served on the board and on the mission team of Haiti Love & Faith.
Marvin is survived by his wife; four daughters, Ronda (Mike) Miller, Topeka, Reatha (Larry) Walker, Lyons, Marvlyn (Raymond Jr.) Soeken, Lyons, and Connie (Dexter) Klein, Dickinson, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Rumsey from Hutchinson and Jalayne Dirksen from Wichita.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Keller, and a brother, Garol D. Chappel.
A celebration of life will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, at First Baptist Church, 8th and Main, Hutchinson, with Pastor Bob Hanthorn officiating. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Visitation will be Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
