Mary "Frances" Maxwell Cilek, 97, died Nov. 9, 2006 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center, Hoisington.
She was born Jan. 16, 1909 in Clay Center, the daughter of James Howat and Jessie Irene Spence Maxwell.
She attended primary school in Clay Center and graduated from High School in Manhattan in 1926. She attended and graduated from KSU in 1930. She taught at Almeda High School, Almena, upon her graduation. She worked for the U.S. Department of Labor in Detroit, Mich., Jacksonville, Fla. and Houston. She then worked for the Poor Commission in Decatur County. She moved to Marysville with her family in 1941, where she began teaching at Oketo High School. The family moved to Hutchinson and she began teaching at Liberty Middle School from 1946 to 1958. She then took a job with the Social Security Administration as a field representative retiring in 1972.
She belonged to the First Presbyterian Church, Chapter "D" PEO, AAUW and was the past president of both Altrusa and the BPW. She enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs. Upon retiring she took up the game of golf whech she enjoyed. She and her husband also enjoyed traveling.
On Aug. 10, 1931 she married Raymond W. Cilek in Manhattan. He died March 3, 2002.
Survivors include: a daughter, Carol McDonnell, Papillion, Neb.; a sister, Edna Edwards, Manhattan; a son-in-law, Edmund Martinez, Great Bend; eight grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Martinez, a brother, William Maxwell and a great granddaughter, Mikiala Martinez.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Soule and the Rev. Helen Moore Spath presiding. Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday through Monday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchisnon. Cremation has baken place. Burial will be in the Big Timber Cemetery, Jennings, at a later date.
Memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church or the the Good Samaritan Center both in care of the funeral home.
