Obituary

Mary Gertrude Gates, 85, died Oct. 13, 2006, at Dillon Living Center, Hutchinson.

She was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Alphonsus H. "Ted" and Margaret M. O'Hara Flanagan. She graduated in 1937 from Gretna High School, Gretna, Neb. A resident of Hutchinson since 2002, moving from Lyons, where she had lived for 38 years, she was a bookkeeper for Dick Cundith, CPA, and Lyons Municipal Airport.

She belonged to Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

On Nov. 24, 1945, she married Ralph William Gates in Omaha, Neb. He died April 13, 2006.

Survivors include: her children, Lawrence C., Overland Park, Robert D., Winfield, Ralph W. Jr., Houston, Mary Jane Weil, Flower Mound, Texas, James E., Hutchinson, and Michael Flanagan, Chandler, Ariz.; a brother, William Flanagan, Santa Monica, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard and Robert Flanagan; and two sisters, Patricia Bernhard and Madge Clark.

Parish rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Church of the Holy Cross, with Father Joseph Eckberg presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the funeral home, with the family present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park.

Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association or Church of the Holy Cross, both in care of the funeral home.
