Mary Gillis, 72, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 5, 2012, in Hutchinson, KS.
She was born April 17, 1940, in Cambridge, Mass., to Archibald and Katherine MacLeod Gillis.
As a child, Mary attended Camp Cherith in Alfred, Maine, a Pioneer Clubs Camp for Girls. She later served there for several summers as a camp counselor, craft director and division director. It was through the Pioneer Clubs ministry that she received Christ as her Savior. She also taught Child Evangelism Clubs one summer in Pennsylvania.
She graduated from Christian High School, Cambridge, Mass., in 1957. After graduation, she worked for Avis Headquarters and was a church secretary, both in Boston. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Sterling College, Sterling, KS, in 1963. Mary taught school in Paxton, MA for one year, then taught second grade at Morgan Elementary School in Hutchinson for 33 years, retiring in 1997.
Mary loved to travel, and after her retirement she enjoyed quilting, card making and volunteering at the Hospital Gift Shop. She went on two mission trips to Kodiak, Alaska.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Heart of Kansas Quilt Guild, and Christian Women's Club. She faithfully attended Countryside Baptist Church in Hutchinson. Mary was featured in the Who's Who Among America's Educators.
Survivors include: a brother, Robert Gillis and wife Betty, Newington, CT; sister, Donna MacDonald and husband Raymond, Truro, Nova Scotia; nephew, Andrew Gillis and wife Jeanne, Clayton, SC; niece, Jane Gillis, Newington, CT; and three great-nieces, Sara, Melanie, and Amanda Gillis; and longtime friend, Sharon Breneman of Hutchinson.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Archibald "Buddy" Gillis.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at Countryside Baptist Church, 819 W. 30th, Hutchinson, with Pastor Cliff Kirk officiating. Friends may sign the book Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, with the family to receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. The casket will remain closed. Burial will take place in the Gardens at Gethsemane Cemetery, Boston, MA. Memorials may be made to the church or the Pioneer Clubs, both in care of the mortuary.
