Mary Ellen Hayes, 83, of Hutchinson, formerly of Castleton, died March 5, 2012, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.
She was born March 12, 1928, in Pretty Prairie, the daughter of Carl George and Martha Freida Unruh Voran.
A graduate of Partridge High School, she was a homemaker, a 4-H leader, Sunday school teacher, a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Kansas State Fair and a member of Castleton Union Church.
On Aug. 7, 1947, she married Marion Lee Hayes, in Pretty Prairie. He died Sept. 7, 2005.
Survivors include: sons, James Hayes and his wife Jill of Hutchinson; daughters, Connie Strawn of Hutchinson and Jerri Corkins and husband Rick of Buhler; brother, Reverend Peter Voran and wife Lois of Newton; sisters, Mildred Austermiller of Newton and Betty Engle and husband Bill of Pineville, Mo.; grandchildren, Christopher Hayes and wife Amy, Leslie Hayes, Megan Strawn, Wesley Corkins and fiance Mary Buford, Jill Romero and husband John, Jeni Bryan and husband Andrew, Keley Stein, and Ben Hoffheinz; and a great-grandson, Garrett Hayes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Helen Mitchell.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Elliott Chapel, with Reverend Robert E. Ulrich officiating. Burial will be in Lone Star Cemetery, rural Pretty Prairie, Kan. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
