Mary "Fran" Toms Shelley, 82, died Thursday, December 12, 2013. She was born January 19, 1931 at Turon, the daughter of Omer and Mary Davis Tope.
She attended Cunningham schools, had done a variety of things in her life including reupholstering, the Arlington Post Office, day care provider in Topeka and had co-owned the Kozy Kitchen in Arlington. Fran had also worked at Furrs and Sirloin Stockade in Hutchinson.
She married Lester Eugene "Gene" Toms January 20, 1949 and was later married to James Richard Shelley. He died March 3, 1987. She is survived by her children, Tommy Toms (Cheryl), of Derby, Jerry Toms (Eunice) of Wamego, Teri Toms (Brad McClung) of Wakarusa, a brother, Lavern "Bobby" Tope (Betty) of Rosenberg, Oregon, a sister, Wilma Jean Clemments of Hutchinson, 5 grandchildren, Kylea, Tia, Aaron, Ryan and Keaten, 4 step grandchildren, Joshua, Jennifer, Sean and Nick, 3 great grandchildren, Autumn, Maliki and Darius and 1 step great granddaughter, Emily. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Herbert Leroy Tope, Oscar Tope, Iona Oller and Lucinda Burris.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, December 16, 2013 at Elliott Chapel with Pastor Jim Rhaesa officiating. Private burial will be in Turon Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday with family present 2 to 4 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
