Obituary

Mary Jane Yaeger, 77, of Hutchinson, died Jan. 19, 2011, at Via Christi Hospital, St. Francis in Wichita.

She was born Nov. 15, 1933, on a farm near Elmdale, Kan., the daughter of Winfred and Grace Harder Britain.

After finishing high school at Elmdale, she attended Emporia State for two years to obtain a 60-hour certificate to teach. Her first teaching position was in a rural school in Ness County, where she met and married Larry Yaeger on June 1, 1954, at Strong City. They moved to Dodge City, where they both worked and raised their two sons. Mary Jane was able to finish her elementary education degree at St. Mary Of The Plains College and retired from teaching after 38 years at Sunnyside School in 1993. They planned to spend their retirement years in Gunnison, Colorado, but health issues made it necessary to move closer to medical facilities, and they chose Hutchinson. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, and Larry's parents, Fred and Elnora Yaeger. She is survived by her husband, Larry of the home; sons, Brad Yaeger (Janice) of Wichita and Bruce Yaeger (Linda) of Lafayette, Colo.; grandchildren, Justin Yaeger (Sarah), Matt Yaeger and Beth Masterson (Kyle), all of Wichita, Mandi Walker (Sam) and Mike Yaeger (Kylynn), of Colo.; great-grandchildren, Caleb Yaeger, Braeden Masterson and Cloey Yaeger; and three brothers, John Britain (Nicky) of Marion, Kan., Orville Britain (Mary) of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Bud Britain (Paulette) of Eagle River, Alaska.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Eckberg presiding. Parish rosary will precede the Mass at 10 a.m., also at the church. A private family inurnment will be at a later date in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery at Strong City.
