Marylou G. Gentry, 89, died peacefully March 7, 2007, at Hutchinson Hospital, after a short illness.
She was born Oct. 1, 1917, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Frederick C. and Alice Leonard Gunn. A resident at Wesley Towers for the last 2 1/2 years, she moved there from Sheboygan, Wis.
She graduated from Southwest High School, Kansas City, Mo., in 1935, attended the University of Arizona, and Christian College, Columbia, Mo., and graduated from Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1939. In 1955, she received her master's degree from Marquette University, Milwaukee, and later received her doctorate.
In 1942, she married William Gentry. He died in 1943 in World War II. At the rank of major, Marylou worked at the Pentagon during the war serving in the Women's Army Corps. Marylou settled in Sheboygan, Wis., and worked for the Sheboygan area school district for 30 years. She taught English at Central High School from 1950 to 1960, then South High School from 1960 to 1967. From 1967 to 1980, she was a guidance counselor at Sheboygan North High School. Marylou and her longtime friend, Loizanne Bennet, spent 30 summers in the North Woods, near Woodruff, Wis. After retirement in 1980, Tucson, Ariz., became her winter home.
Survivors include: two sisters, Alice G. Evans, Hutchinson, and Evelyn G. Stephens and husband, Henry, Overland Park; nieces Marty Tokarchik and husband, Ron, Centennial, Colo., Lyn Ganzer and husband, Ron, Overland Park; nephews, John R. Evans and wife, Gloria, Hutchinson, and Jim Fisher and wife, Kathy, Shawnee; and special friends, Tom and Sherry Vandenberg, Sheboygan, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her dear friend, Loizanne Bennet; a niece, Nancy Baumgarten; a nephew, Jack Fisher; and a brother-in-law, Richard L. Evans Jr.
A private family memorial service will be held in Hutchinson.
Memorials may be sent to the Sheboygan North High School, 1042 School Avenue, Sheboygan, WI, 53083. A scholarship for future English teachers will be established in her name.
