Maxine Frances Masterson Colladay, 98, gracefully and peacefully passed away Friday, December 11, 2015. She was a longtime Hutchinson resident for over 88 years.
She outlived many family members: her husband, Charles Grimes Colladay; daughter, Sally Marie Syler; grandson, John Colladay Syler; and great-grandson, Josh Chad Jennings. Survivors include: her three daughters, Susan Perkins of Hutchinson, Nancy Lee (Elbert) of Fresno, CA, and and Marty Quy (Rodger) of Benton. Besides her surviving daughters, Maxine's family extended to eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Maxine was born in her grandmother's home (Elizabeth Frances Taylor), in Coldwater, on November 12, 1917. She was the only daughter of Hosiah Earl (Jack) Masterson and Gladys Marie (Taylor) Masterson. The family moved from Coldwater to Hutchinson when she was age 10. Maxine attended Northside Elementary School, graduated from Hutchinson High School (1935) and then from Hutchinson Community College (1937). She met her husband Charles in high school. They dated and married in 1939. In the 1970s, Maxine ran a gift shop attached to the front of Northgate Hardware Store on East 30th and Plum in Hutchinson. She was talented in purchasing and arranging home decor. Maxine was an avid bridge player and enjoyed knitting hundreds of scarves. She enjoyed watching golf, basketball and tennis. Maxine was a charter member P.E.O., Hutchinson First Presbyterian Church for over 75 years, and a longtime member of Hutchinson Town Club. She was a strong supporter of the local Boy Scouts.
