Maxine Griffin Stremel, 93, died Oct. 29, 2005, at Hester Care Center.
She was born July 18, 1912, in Newton, the daughter of James J. and Gertrude Smith Griffin. She graduated in 1930 from Garden City High School and in 1932 from Hardin College, Mexico, Mo. A resident of Hutchinson since 1937, she was a nurse's aide at St. Elizabeth Hospital and worked for Jim's Market on 4th and Plum.
She belonged to St. Teresa's Catholic Church, was past PTA president, president of the Hutchinson Bowling Association, Altar Society, Scout Leader, Gabba XL EHU, Wesley Players, Wesley Singers and was Mother of the Year in 1951, all in Hutchinson.
On Nov. 9, 1934, she married Jerome F. "Jerry" Stremel, in Garden City. He died Aug. 12, 1987.
Survivors include: their children, Jerry Stremel Jr., and his wife, Susan, Kirksville, Mo., Roger Stremel and his wife, Jan, Ellinwood, Bob Stremel and his wife, Lexie, Oak Harbor, Wash., Sharon Utz and her husband, Norman, Houston, and Linda Fleming and her husband, James, Nickerson; 13 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Stremel; three brothers, Major, Bill and Russell Griffin; and two granddaughters, Tami Stremel and Leslie Stremel.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Teresa's Catholic Church, with Father Stuart M. Smeltzer presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park.
Memorials may be sent to St. Teresa's Catholic Church, the Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Towers, or Hospice Care of Kansas, all in care of the funeral home.
