Maynard Philip Bauer, 88, died Dec. 6, 2005, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.
He was born July 13, 1917, in Burdett, the son of Philip Jacob and Frances Mooney Bauer. He was a 1934 graduate of Burdett High School and a 1938 graduate of Creighton University Business School, Omaha, Neb. A Hutchinson resident since 1958, he was the owner and operator of Bauer General Store, Burdett, until it burned down in 1956. He started life insurance sales in 1957 and retired as vice president of marketing from Great American Life Insurance Co. in 1983.
He was a life member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68, serving as post commander 1972-73 and 1980-81, and 7th district commander from 1975-1976; member of 40E8t; and served as Entertainment Chairman for the NJCAA Basketball Tournament for 25 years. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran on the battleship USS South Dakota in the South Pacific.
In September of 1938, he married Grace Duke in Omaha, Neb. He later married Charleen Danford Richardson in February of 1973 in Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Philip Bauer and wife, Mary, Plano, Texas, and Michael Bauer and wife, Jeanette, Murphy, Texas; stepchildren, Marell Richardson, Michigan, Kathleen Richardson-New and husband, Robert, Merrit Island, Fla., and Patti Hamilton, Hector, Ark.; two brothers, Emmett Bauer and wife, Lois, and Lawrence Bauer and wife, Eleanor, all of Burdett; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with Rev. Nick Warner presiding. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the mortuary. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Memorials may be sent to Cancer Council of Reno County or to Hospice of Reno County, all in care of the mortuary.
