Obituary

Melvin E. Schnider, 85, died Jan. 26, 2006, at his home, Hutchinson.

He was born Dec. 9, 1920, in Salem, S.D., the son of Frank C. and Goldie F. Tuttle Schnider. He was a 1938 graduate of Lawrence High School and attended the University of Kansas. A Hutchinson resident since 1947, he was an Internal Revenue Service agent for 30 years, retiring in 1977.

He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church. He was past commander of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68 and was treasurer of the NJCAA Basketball Tournament from 1977 to 2002. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in France and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

On Sept. 10, 1945, he married Elsie Marie Beech in Lawrence. She survives.

Other survivors include: their children, Diana Major, Decorah, Iowa, Michael Schnider, Beth Luman, Robbie Harp and Tammy Jordan, all of Hutchinson; a sister, Evelyn Dempewolf; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Gene Schnider; and a sister, Marie Dempewolf.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Nick Warner presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday, all at the mortuary. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, with military honors conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard.
