Merle L. Craft, 89, graduated to Heaven on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at Oxford Grand Home, Wichita. She was born Dec. 13, 1925, on a farm outside of Offerle, and at the age of 5 her family moved to Garfield, where she grew up.
Merle was a 1944 graduate of Kinsley High School. She and William L. Craft were married on June 6, 1946, and spent their early married years living in Kinsley, Copeland, and Ellsworth, prior to moving to Hutchinson in 1957.
In Jan. of 2015, she moved to Wichita to be close to her son and his extended family. Merle was a talented, resourceful, hard-working woman who was gifted with many abilities including developing family history books, sewing, decorating cakes, arts and crafts projects, and helping with repairs and rental properties. Merle enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, square dancing, camping, skiing, fishing, the Nickerson High School pen-pal program, and staying in touch with Hutchinson Community College retirees. She and Bill were members of the Hutchinson Horseless Carriage Club, the Buhler Ramblers Club, Hutchinson Waters Sports Club, and members of the Hutchinson First United Methodist Church and the Double Circle Sunday School Class for the past 58 years.
She is survived by: son, Richard Craft and wife Connie of Maize; daughter, Linda Stewart and husband Richard of Bella Vista, Ark.; grandchildren, Chad Dyson and wife Chris, Eric Craft and wife Melinda, Delena Reed and husband Kelly, Angela Blair and husband Cory, Richelle Bloom and husband David; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathleen Foster. Merle was preceded in death by her parents, Tony and Lila Thennes; husband, William "Bill" Craft; and brother, David Thennes.
Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2015, at First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2015, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
