Obituary

Michael J. Mooney, Jr., 89, passed away March 17, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.  He was born November 16, 1932, in Hutchinson, to Michael J. and Margaret (Hamilton) Mooney, Sr.

Michael was a 1951 graduate of Maur Hill High School, Atchison.  He attended Hutchinson Community College and the University of Kansas.  Michael served in the United States Army during the Korean War from February 1953 through January 1956.  He worked as the President and Chief Executive Office of Godfather's Pizza, and then retired as the owner of Hamilton Roofing.

Michael was a member of the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Junior Chamber of Commerce, and Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.  He was a board member of Mid-West Roofing Association, and a member of Prairie Dunes Country Club, who enjoyed playing competitive golf.  Michael's love of golf earned him the title of Champion of the Yucca Ruccus Golf Tournament held at Prairie Dunes.

On July 4, 1953, he married Patricia Ann Barry, in Aberdeen, MD.  They shared over 68 years of marriage, prior to her death on January 6, 2022.

Michael is survived by:  his children, Mike Mooney III of Phoenix, AZ, Maureen Mooney of Hutchinson, and Kathleen (Darel) Ansley of Wenatchee, WA; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and sisters, Margaret Ann Hohl of Wichita, and Mary Bauer of Plano, TX.

He was preceded in death by:  his parents; wife; son, Mark J. Mooney; and sister, Helen Mullen.

Parish rosary will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at the church, with both services to be officiated by Father Aaron Spexarth.  Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.  Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.  Friends may sign the book from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, March 21, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at Elliott Mortuary.  The casket will remain closed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Church of the Holy Cross, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
