Obituary

Mildred Joyce Dundas, 86, formerly of Hutchinson, died October 4, 2026, surrounded by her family at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. She was born December 22, 1939, in Hutchinson, to Ralph F. and Helen M. (Smith) Peterson.

Mildred was a graduate of Bushton High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in home economics from Fort Hays State University. She taught home economics at Ness City, Russell, and Fairfield schools. Mildred later became an aide in the English Department at Hutchinson Community College. She left her career in education to own and operate The Paper Place, located in Wiley Plaza in Hutchinson, a wedding shop specializing in personalized stationery and invitations. After selling The Paper Place, Mildred volunteered at the Hutchinson Hospital Gift Shop, eventually becoming one of the managers of the Gift Shop.

She was involved in the Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel (KARSP), the Hutchinson unit of Retired School Personnel, Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, and The Faculty Wives at Hutchinson Community College. Mildred was an active volunteer and enjoyed going on mission trips across the country as well as around the world.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she participated in the handbell choir, Doers Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women, and served on many committees. After living in Hutchinson for 50 years, Mildred moved to Olathe to be closer to her family, where she became a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

On June 14, 1964, she married Kay William Dundas in Greensburg. They were truly partners in life as they built a family together. Mildred found great pride in attending all her boys’ activities and watching them raise their own children. She deeply loved her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She made sure she was always present for the special events in their lives.

Mildred is survived by her husband of 62 years, Kay Dundas; sons, Barry (Diana) Dundas, both of Olathe, and Rodger (Andrea) Dundas of Overland Park; grandchildren, Amy (Stone) Tighe of Manhattan, Kyle Dundas of Sherman Oaks, CA, Adam Dundas, and Eric Dundas, both of Overland Park; great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Archer of Manhattan, KS; nieces, Tonie (Mike) Foster of Warrensburg, MO, Susan (Roy) Epps of Mesa, AZ, and Lori (David) Kohl of Overland Park, KS, Shontel Sherwood (Cheryl Vlacilek) of Laguna Hills, CA; nephews, Mark (Lisa) Rohrbaugh of Lenexa and Mitchell (Ilona Bissman) Rohrbaugh of Greenwood, IN; sisters-in-law, Alta Levin of Mesa, AZ and Jane Dundas of Dighton, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Merle Peterson; sister, Elizabeth “Betsy” Rohrbaugh; brother-in-law, Bryce Rohrbaugh; sister-in-law, Nina Sherwood; and brother-in-law, Irvin Levin.

A memorial service will be held Monday, November 23, at 1:30 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 11485 S. Ridgeview, Olathe, with Rev. Mitch Todd and Rev. Maria Campbell officiating. Inurnment will be announced at a later date and will be held in Trinity United Methodist Church Columbarium, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson. Friends may sign her guest book at Elliott Mortuary.
