Nile "Layton" Burns, 84, died Jan. 30, 2007.
He was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Partridge, the son of William and Inez Burns. In 1940, he graduated from Partridge High School. A longtime resident of Hutchinson, he was owner of Smith's Market from 1965 until his retirement in 1985.
He belonged to South Hutchinson United Methodist Church. He was a member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe.
On May 6, 1946, he married June M. Smith in South Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: three sons, Jack, Hutchinson, Bill, Greenwich, Conn., and Larry Lancaster, Penn.; a brother, LaVern and wife, Mary, Hutchinson; five grandchildren, Brandon Burns and wife, Tara, San Diego, Brent Burns and wife, Sherri, Branson, Mo., William and Claire Burns, Greenwich, Conn., and Troy Parks, Wichita; seven great-grandchildren, Tristen and Teah Burns, Paige, Mikayla and Brandon Burns, Thomas and Tara Parks; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin Burns; and two sisters, Neoma Buckley and Beryl Laughlin.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Richard E. Zimmerman officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary. Cremation has taken place.
