Obituary

Norman C. Bos, M.D., 86, of Hutchinson, died Sept. 3, 2011, at the Hospice House. He had suffered from severe pulmonary fibrosis for many months.

He was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Chicago, Ill., the only surviving child of Nonna C. and Jean Adams Bos.

Dr. Bos had lived in Hutchinson since 1960, practicing orthopaedic surgery at the Hutchinson Orthopaedic Clinic and the Hutchinson Clinic until his retirement in 1990. After graduating from Oak Park River Forest High School, Oak Park, Ill., in 1942, Dr. Bos was educated at Monmouth College, Monmouth, Ill., Yale University, New Haven, Conn., and the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago. He completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Bos was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and Cold War veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Dr. Bos was a member of the Mid-Central States Orthopaedic Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, serving as a counselor from Kansas. He was a longtime supporter of the Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

On Aug. 23, 1946, Dr. Bos married Gladys Sullivan of Grace, Idaho, and they honeymooned in the Idaho Sawtooth Range. On Aug. 23, 2011, they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

After his retirement from medicine, Dr. Bos served as a docent at the Cosmosphere for many years. He was a lifelong learner with a fascination for the natural world. He is survived by his wife, Gladys, of Hutchinson; three sons, Norman C. Bos II (Diane) of Star Valley Ranch, Wyo., Robert S. Bos of Austin, Texas, Steven J. Bos of Lincoln, Neb.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, with Reverend Jim Rhaesa officiating. Inurnment will be at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Friends may sign the register book Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center or Hospice of Reno County.
