Ocie Zay Smith, 84, went to be with the Lord Dec. 27, 2009, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.
She was born Oct. 24, 1925, in Washington, Kansas, to Roy Wilbur and Gladys Hewitt Latham.
She attended Washington High School. A longtime Hutchinson resident, she was a retired custodian for Grace Hospital and then later Hutchinson Hospital.
She volunteered for crocheting for disabled veterans through Elmdale as well as Hutchinson Hospital.
On Aug. 2, 1941, she married Oliver A. "Bud" Smith in Washington, Kansas. He died April 4, 1988. Survivors include: sons, Frank and wife Brenda, Mission, Texas, John and wife Karen, Nickerson, Robert and wife Connie, Karl and wife Yong, and Rick and wife Arlene, all of Hutchinson; a daughter, Georgia Walden and husband Richard, Hutchinson; brother, Gary Latham, Chicago; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Dean Latham.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with Chaplain Robert Phipps presiding. She donated her body to the Life Legacy Foundation for medical research. Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 30, 2009, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
