Obituary

Opal M. Corey, 93, of Hutchinson, died Aug. 24, 2009, at the Thorne Care Center in Hutchinson.

She was born Feb. 26, 1916, at South Hutchinson, the daughter of Jay R. and Sadie Thomas Perry. She attended schools in Hutchinson and graduated from Hutchinson High School in the Class of 1934.

She was a former employee of The Wiley Tea Room, the Hutchinson News, and later was a longtime Office Manager at Mid-West Hearing Aids in Hutchinson. She was a 69-year member of the First United Methodist Church, a longtime member of the Carey Park Women's Golf Association, the Hutchinson Women's Bowling Association, and a supporter of the Delos Smith Senior Center in Hutchinson. She was an excellent bridge player and was the city bridge champion, as well as the city champion in bowling and ping-pong, and was the runner-up in the city women's golf championship.

She married Loris Corey on Sept. 23, 1936, in Hutchinson. He died Dec. 16, 1993.

Survivors include: a son John L. Corey, and his wife Marcia; and a daughter Ginger L. Martin, and her husband Bill, all of Hutchinson; four grandchildren, Bary Martin, and his wife Sherry, Todd Martin, and his wife Elizabeth, Marci Malashchuk, and her husband Eric, and Cris Corey, and his wife Laura; and seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Kori, Hannah, Matthew, Maggie, and Mason Martin, and Gibson Malashchuk. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three sisters, and an infant daughter Barbara Jo.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday at the Elliott Mortuary, with Rev. Mark Conard presiding. Burial will be in the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum. A visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be given to the First United Methodist Church, or Wesley Towers Foundation-Special Care Unit, or Hospice of Reno County, all sent in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
