Obituary

Ora Kendall Griggs, 74, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at Navarro Regional Hospital at Corisicana, Texas. He was born in Hunter, Oklahoma, on Sept. 27, 1937, the son of Lloyd and Annabelle Anderson Griggs.

He graduated from Hunter High School in 1955. Kendall graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Alva, Oklahoma, and attended Oklahoma State University. He earned a Master's Degree in mathematics education from the University of Detroit and a Specialists Degree from Emporia State University. He taught mathematics for 51 years, starting at Sherman Jr. High School and Buhler High School, then at Hutchinson Community College for 33 years, retiring in 2000. Kendall taught mathematics and statistics at Kansas State University, Salina, for nine years, retiring again in May 2010. He was a member of Park Place Christian Church, where he was an elder and Memorial's Committee member. Kendall was treasurer for the Reno County Genealogical Society and scorer at HCC basketball games for 30 years. He was a Match 2 Volunteer for the Offender Victim Ministries at Hutchinson Correctional Facility.

On Aug. 12, 1961, he married Sylvia J. Leak.

She survives along with their children: Janelle and Stewart Hanson, Andover, Darrell and Chris Griggs, Sedgwick; one brother, Dwight and Jeanne Griggs, Wheatridge, Colorado; three sisters, Glorene and Lowell Redfern, El Dorado, Dru Graves, Bethany, Oklahoma, Lois and Archie Jones, Wylie, Texas; a sister-in-law, Neva Griggs, Homer Glen, Illinois; five grandchildren, Paige, Tyler and Lauren Griggs, Keegan and Luke Hanson.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Neil, and brother-in-law, Jim Graves.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Park Place Christian Church, 2600 N. Adams, with Rev. Dr. Kim Biery officiating. His register book will be available 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Park Place Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the church or Offender Victim Ministries, in care of the mortuary.
