Obituary

Otho Bernard "Barney" Ewbank, 91, died Feb. 27, 2010, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community, Lawrence. He was born Nov. 22, 1918, in Hutchinson, Kan., the son of Lester & Gracia Harrison Ewbank. On Sept. 10, 1944, he married Ann R. Vento in New York City. She died May 8, 2004.

Survivors include: four daughters Carolyn Henderson, Norristown, Pa, Mary Yadon, Lawrence, Kan., Elaine Litton, Omaha, Neb., and Jeannette Ewbank-Bryant, Lawrence, Kan.; nine grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; a sister, Mary Arrington, Wichita; and sister-in-law Dorothy Ewbank, Hagerstown, Mass.; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by: a daughter, Gracia; brother, Herbert Ewbank; and sister, Bonnie Mitchell.

Barney served in the U.S. Navy in Italy and North Africa during WWII. His ship was blown up and sunk at Anzio Harbor in 1944. Because of his injuries he was awarded a Purple Heart. He graduated from the New York Institute of Photography, New York City. He was an award-winning independent photographer after his retirement from Cessna Fluid Power as a machinist. A longtime Hutchinson area resident, he moved to Lawrence in 2004. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, International Machinist Union and was a former member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Hutchinson.

Cremation has taken place and funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date by Elliott Mortuary & Crematory, Hutchinson.
