Obituary

WINFIELD - Otis Ray Griggs, 86, died Dec. 3, 2007, at Good Samaritan Village, Winfield.

He was born Oct. 17, 1921, in Brooksville, the son of Otis and Melvena Lindquist Griggs. He attended Brookville High School and graduated from Marion High School in 1939. He also received his bachelor's degree in animal husbandry in 1951 from Kansas State University and his master's degree in range management from Oklahoma State University in 1965. He was an agricultural extension agent in Stevens, Osborne, Finney and Reno counties and was an animal husbandry specialist for the USDA, serving in Nigeria.

He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68, the Extension Agents Association, State Fair Promenaders, the Salt City Shakers Square Dancers, and was also a member of several bowling leagues and a former member of the Kiwanis Club.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Sept. 2, 1944, he married Roselma Fox at Newton. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Gail Griggs, Independence, Mo.; three daughters, Cynthia Shotts, McPherson, Susan Rush, Winfield, and Debra Deines, Wichita; two brothers, Bill Griggs, Los Angeles, and Laurence Griggs, Phoenix; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Nathan Deines, and a brother, Keith Griggs.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. A graveside service will take place at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Grant Township Cemetery, rural Marion, with the Rev. Pat Ault-Duell presiding. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Memorials may be sent to the church or the Kansas 4-H Foundation, both in care of the mortuary.
