Patricia Louise "Pat" Baker died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born Nov. 25, 1942, in Lyons, to Oscar and Ethel (Hedges) Laudick.
A longtime Hutchinson resident, she was a member of St. Teresa's and later Holy Cross Catholic Church. She died of complications from a paralyzing stroke in April and a second in May which largely stole her ability to speak. She was active in the Wiley School PTA as each of her children attended and taught CCD at St. Teresa's. She worked at Kline Insurance for years and held offices with the Hutchinson chapter of the National Association of Insurance Women. Later she worked at Hutchinson Clinic and retired to volunteer for the church, for Hutchinson Hospital and Meals on Wheels, among other non-profit agencies. She was an avid reader, birdwatcher and made a delectable chocolate sheet cake. She cultivated varieties of iris and peonies, always preparing bouquets of the latter for Memorial Day.
She was preceded in death by husband, Kenneth Neal Baker. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Kenneth Alan Baker and his wife Mary Lynn of Hutchinson, Karen Diane O'Keefe and her husband Tim of Denver, Colo., and Kevin Patrick Baker and his wife Kun Lu of Alameda, Calif.; two grandsons, Alexander James Baker, a college senior in Evanston, Ill. and six-month-old, Kai Wen Baker in Alameda; mother-in-law, Jean Baker of Sterling; and her beloved siblings by marriage, Carl and Rhonda Baker of Hutchinson and Ann and Phil Short of Burrton. Pat was the youngest girl among "the Laudick kids" in Lyons. Sisters, Joanne Ary and Ellen Hawkins survive. Sister, "Peg" Hass, and brothers, Bob, Jack and Mike Laudick have all preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces and nephews too numerous to mention here but for whom she cares very much. She would want her fellow parishioners and community volunteers to know that her wish would have been to spend her final days in service alongside you speaking of grandkids, but God called her home by another path.
Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at Church of the Holy Cross with Father Roger S. Lumbre presiding. Private family burial will be in Lyons Cemetery, Lyons. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
