Pattie V.
Schmitt
Mar 17, 1937 — Jul 4, 2026
Pattie V. Schmitt, 89, of Hutchinson, passed away July 4, 2026, at Thorne Care Center. She was born March 17, 1937, in Hutchinson, to H. Clark and Doris N. (Marts) Ward.
Pattie grew up on the family farm near Alden and graduated from Alden High School. While attending Hutchinson Junior College, where she was Football Homecoming Queen, Pattie met Tom Schmitt, who was on the golf team. They were married on June 8, 1957, in Hutchinson, and shared nearly 46 years of marriage before his passing on May 6, 2003.
Pattie’s passion for interior decorating was expressed through her business, Schmitt Interiors, which she started and then continued to work at for over 25 years, and in her continued involvement until she was in her 80’s.
Pattie was the heart of her family—a wonderful mother and great grandmother whose love was shown in countless ways. She was an excellent cook, filling her home with delicious meals and warm hospitality, and an outstanding seamstress who lovingly created special holiday outfits for her grandchildren. Known affectionately as “Grandma Pat” not only to her own grandchildren but to countless friends, Pattie had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome and at home. During the holidays, she truly earned the title of the “Christmas Queen,” opening her home each year for festive gatherings where family, friends, and the neighborhood came together to celebrate the season.
Pattie was a devoted golf wife and enjoyed participating in the Bridge club at Prairie Dunes County Club and served as Den Mother when her sons were in Cub Scouts. She was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served on the boards of Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, Hutchinson Town Club, Wesley Towers, Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, and TECH.
Pattie is survived by her sons, Tom Schmitt (Connie) of Marquette, Bob Schmitt (Sandra) of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jennifer Schmitt of Lawrence, Jessica Noyes (Andrew) of Overland Park, Braden Schmitt (Sloan) of Overland Park, Dylan Schmitt (Sami) of Lenexa; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Bob Ward (Colleen) of Hutchinson; and many extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Kent Pedersen officiating. The casket will remain closed. Entombment will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park Mausoleum.
Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main St., Hutchinson, KS 67501.
