Paulena "Fern" Gilbert passed away in Hutchinson on Aug. 25, 2012.
She was born at Great Bend, the youngest of three children, on June 3, 1918, to Arthur and Nora Depew Suedekum.
They moved to Stafford when she was two years old. She attended Stafford schools and graduated from Stafford High School with the class of 1936.
On July 14, 1940, she married Fred Gilbert. Fred was in the Army for three years, and when he was discharged they moved to Hutchinson. Fern loved to bowl, and helped organize the Coffee Pot League at Riverside Bowling Alley, where she was secretary of the league for forty years. She was secretary for several years of the Salt Plains Pointing Dog Club, which Fred helped organize. She had belonged to the W.I.B.C. and the Rebekahs #426 of St. John. She went with Fred to dog trials and they enjoyed hunting and fishing together.
Fred passed away June 14, 2004, after nearly 64 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by both parents; a brother, Harold Suedekum, formerly of Tuolumma, Calif.; and a sister, Hilda Williams, formerly of St. John. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and many friends.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at Elliott Mortuary with Pastor Paul Yoder officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in St. John.
