Obituary

Pauline McGonigle, 83, died peacefully Jan. 20, 2007, at Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital, in Wichita, with her family at her side. She was born March 23, 1923, in Pembroke, Wales, United Kingdom to John and Edie Outhwaite. Pauline immigrated to the United States with her parents and brother in May 1928, sailing two weeks on the RMS Berengaria and settling on a farm near Pretty Prairie, Kan.

She was a 1940, graduate of Pretty Prairie High School and a 1944, graduate of St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing, Hutchinson, following an internship at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She served many years as a registered nurse specializing in pediatrics at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Prior to her retirement in 1980, she served as a private duty nurse specializing in end-of-life care.

Pauline was preceded in death by her brother, Eric Raymond Outhwaite, who died in the World War II Battle of the Bulge. Her father, John Outhwaite died Dec. 20, 1957, in Pretty Prairie and her mother, Edith May Raymond Outhwaite, died Sept. 28, 1972, in Hutchinson.

On Sept. 25, 1957, she married James Key McGonigle in Hutchinson. He died Feb. 5, 2001. Following her husband's death, she moved to Wichita after living in Reno County for 73 years.

She is survived by her son, Eric McGonigle and his wife the Rev. Dr. Robin Bretz McGonigle, Wichita; granddaughter, Erin Ashley McGonigle, Kansas City, Mo.; grandsons, Adam Skeen McGonigle, Lawrence, Kan., Ian James McGonigle, and Kyle Barnes, both of Wichita. A lifelong feline fanatic, Pauline is also survived by her beloved cat Tanzi Lu.

Other survivors include: stepsons, Steve Wanasek and wife Sandy, Rogers, Ark., Mac McGonigle and wife Connie, Moreno Valley, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Carol Sue McGonigle Thebeau, San Marcos, Calif.; she had 10 step-grandchildren; and 21 step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with burial following at Memorial Park Cemetery. Officiating will be her daughter-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Robin McGonigle, and the Rev. Mark Conard. Memorials may be made to Pine Valley Christian Church in care of the mortuary, 1219 North Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will receive friends on Wednesday prior to the service from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
