Obituary

Peggy Susan Childs, 61, died Dec. 26, 2010, from ALS. She was born April 22, 1949, at Cedar Vale, the daughter of Ralph and E. Emogene Williams Thorne.
Peggy was a 1967 graduate of Hutchinson High School, a 1971 graduate of University of Kansas, then taught 6th grade in the Topeka Public Schools while her husband attended Washburn Law School. She was a stay-at-home mother to their three daughters, later substituted for the Nickerson School district, then served as Christian Education Director at Trinity United Methodist Church for thirteen years. She served on several ministry groups for the Kansas West Conference of the United Methodist Church, served on the Hutchinson Recreation Commission and was a member of the Educational Facilities Authority of Reno County board of directors. For 23 years she was a member of the Hutchinson USD 308 School Board until her resignation in May of 2010 due to her illness. Peggy served several terms as president of this board during her tenure.

On Dec. 27, 1970, she married Steven P. Childs in Hutchinson. He survives. Other survivors include: her mother of Hutchinson; three daughters and husbands, Dr. Stephanie and Jim Casey of Evanston, ILL., Heather and Paul Woelk of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Emily and Frank Shipley of Edgewood, Ky.; two sisters, Mary and Mike French of Houston, Texas, and Carol and Ralph Hanna of Bartelsville, Okla.; six grandchildren, Elizabeth and Connor Casey, Anna, Gavin and Owen Woelk, and Alaina Shipley. She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Reverend Pat Ault-Duell officiating.  Her register book will be available 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Peggy Childs Fund for USD 308 at the Hutchinson Community Foundation, Hospice and Homecare of Reno County or to the ALS Association Keith Worthington Chapter in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson.
